A tranquil freshwater lake in the Great Rift Valley, offering boat safaris among hippos, world-class birding, and a peaceful contrast to the big game parks.
Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, surrounded by yellow fever acacia forest and floating papyrus beds. Boat safaris on the lake offer close encounters with hippo pods, while the shores attract buffalos, giraffes, zebras, and waterbucks. Over 400 bird species have been recorded, making it one of Kenya’s premier birding destinations.
Lake Naivasha sits 90 kilometres northwest of Nairobi and is frequently combined with Lake Nakuru and Hell’s Gate on a Rift Valley circuit. It is also a popular base for travellers heading to or from the Maasai Mara.
