A tropical island off the Tanzanian coast with white sand beaches, turquoise Indian Ocean waters, and a rich Swahili history. Zanzibar is the perfect coastal escape to combine with a Tanzania safari
Zanzibar is an archipelago of coral islands approximately 25 kilometres off the Tanzanian coast in the Indian Ocean, the largest of which is Unguja, commonly referred to as Zanzibar Island. Its coastline is lined with white coral sand beaches and calm turquoise waters protected by a barrier reef, making it ideal for snorkelling, diving, kite surfing, and deep sea fishing throughout the year.
Stone Town, Zanzibar’s historic capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a maze of narrow streets, ornate carved wooden doors, mosques, and Arab trading houses that reflect the island’s centuries-old position as a centre of the Indian Ocean spice and slave trade. Zanzibar is the natural conclusion to any Tanzania safari itinerary, easily reached by short flight or ferry from Dar es Salaam. Most visitors spend three to five days on the island after their safari.
